Tables Turned: Dog Owner Wonders Who’s Training Who

Tables Turned: Dog Owner Wonders Who’s Training Who

The situation sounds all too familiar.  Family buys a puppy, buys all the supplies, dog bed, and a heck of a lot of toys and treats to spoil the insatiably cute puppy eyed fellow.  The heads of household take note to set boundaries, making sure that number one, the puppy is crate and potty trained, sticks with a strict dog food diet, has a regular exercise regimen, etc.

But as time goes on, and as puppy grows up and intelligently learns how to appropriately behave, obeys orders, performs tricks, gives smothering, unconditional love, and don’t forget the puppy eyes, human gives in and gets relaxed with the rules.

The laxed part is where it it all begins.  It can be compared to developing bad habits like constantly being lazy, forgetting to exercise and eating junk food.

Dog then realizes that human will give in and that he/she is the master of puppy eyes and uses its ability to shake hands to scratch its human to get their attention.  Human gives in and starts giving table scraps, which eventually leads to sharing dinner.

Dog then discovers couch and human bed, puppy eyes and cuddling is performed to seal the deal, crate collects dust and eventually ends up in storage.

Some dogs will go far as to take it to another level.  Take Ginger, for example, a ruby king charles cavalier spaniel, who at an early age, was easily trained, making her first debuts on youtube with a few videos going viral and eventually picked up by Animal Planet.

Her owner monetized some of these performances and before turning 2, she already had her own bank account and was paying for her own health insurance and any damages she made around the house, like eating the baseboards.  To maintain the constant income, website, blog, facebook, instagram, youtube, and various other social media accounts needed to be maintained, which in addition to caring for the cavalier king charles, became part of the everyday responsibilities.

Ginger went as far as mastering the “sleep in owner’s bed and tuck me” in trick:

You’ll find this arrangement and routine all too common around social media.  A simply search on instagram for your favorite dog breed will pull up dozens of accounts with dog owners and pets having up to millions of followers, all sharing their daily lives of being pampered by their owners.

With social media, some dog owners do it just for fun, others do it for the free treats.  But at the end of it all, you have to ask yourself, with all that pampering and attention, who’s really training who?
